Microchipping
You think you know your pet’s behaviors like the back of your hand. Then, one day they manage to get out of the house and bolt headlong down the street. You call after them, shake a bag of treats, try running after them, but they’re long gone. What can you do now?
We offer pet microchipping services to our patients here in Hugo because we know pets are unpredictable. We believe it’s always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to their safety. According to the American Humane Association, an estimated 10 million dogs and cats get lost or stolen every year in the US. Additionally, 1 in 3 pets will go missing at some point during their life. Why risk those odds?
How Pet Microchipping Works:
At P.A.W.S. Pet Hospital, we offer the HomeAgain microchip for cats and dogs. These microchips are roughly 12mm in length or the same size as a grain of rice. One of our veterinarians simply injects the microchip under your pet’s skin between their shoulder blades, and it remains there for life. This quick procedure requires no anesthetic and is virtually painless. The HomeAgain microchip possesses an anti-migration feature that keeps it in place for easy scanning in the future.
How Does a Microchip Function:
Contrary to certain beliefs, microchips are not GPS devices that help you track your pet’s whereabouts. Microchips are actually a permanent form of identification that possess their own unique ID number. A handheld scanning device emits low-frequency radio waves that have just enough energy to activate the microchip to transmit its ID number to the scanner, which in turn displays the number on its screen.
How to Register Your Pet’s Microchip:
We recommend going online to register your microchip. We’ll provide you with the instructions to find the website and submit your contact information to the HomeAgain National Pet Recovery Database. Should you lose your pet and they end up at a shelter or other animal hospital, a staff member can scan the microchip. Then, they either call the manufacturer or go online to match up your pet’s ID number with your contact information.
