Surgery

Hearing your veterinarian mention the word “surgery” during your pet’s annual visit might give you pause, or it may even make you anxious. Whether it is something routine or much more complex, you want to know that your pet will be as safe and comfortable as possible during their surgery. At P.A.W.S. Pet Hospital in Hugo, we know that pet surgery can be stressful for companion animals and their owners. That’s why we take great care to explain the process and answer any questions you have. It’s important to us that you’re well-informed about your pet’s procedure and feel confident about choosing surgery as an option for keeping your best friend well.

Pet Surgery Services:

To provide our four-legged patients with the most complete care possible, we offer many pet surgery services. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Spays and neuters
  • Declaws
  • Mass removals
  • Perineal Urethrostomy surgery
  • Cystotomies
  • Cranial Cruciate Repair -> extracapsular/TTA
  • Complete Oral Health Assessment and Treatment (COHAT) -> dental cleaning, oral surgeries/sealants
  • Referral Surgeons – used for complicated surgical cases

What To Expect:

Before putting any pets under anesthesia for surgery, we perform pre-anesthetic blood testing to check for underlying health issues and to make sure they can be safely anesthetized. Should your pet have a condition that could put them at risk during surgery, we’ll postpone the procedure and focus on treating the problem. If your pet’s tests come back normal, we can proceed with surgery.

During surgery, all pets receive fluids through an IV catheter, along with constant rate infusions of pain medication. An experienced veterinary technician closely monitors blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate throughout the procedure. Immediately after surgery, we keep your pet warm with a pet-safe heating pad to keep their body temperature from dropping.

Post-Surgical Care:

Following surgery, we treat all pets (except cancer cases) with laser therapy to help speed up healing, reduce inflammation, and decrease pain. In recovery, they are given comfortable bedding and pet-safe heating pads for added warmth. Once they’re able to safely stand on their own, we contact you. At pick-up time, we’ll discuss all aspects of at-home care and answer any other questions you might have about your pet’s recovery.
